In 2026, sdpa students took all three top spots in the 15-18 division at the MTAC Southern Regional, the largest competition stage in Southern California. Our students go on to top conservatories.
A Banner Year

More Than Lessons. An Academy.
San Diego Piano Academy is a year round home for pianists. Founded by concert pianists Chetan and Melissa Tierra, sdpa pairs elite teaching with the structure of a true institution: a performance calendar that runs all year, an earned credential, an honors designation, a professional artist series students grow up hearing, and a community that takes music seriously and celebrates it together.
We serve all of San Diego County, every age and every level. While classical is our foundation, we also teach jazz, pop, film scoring, composition, and improvisation, taught by faculty who specialize in each. For beginners and intermediate students, we build a flawless foundation from the very first lesson. For advanced pianists and aspiring professionals, we provide guidance of the highest order. The standard is high here no matter who you are. That is what it means to study at an academy rather than take lessons.

Excellence Starts at the Top
Excellence starts at the top here. Our artistic director, Chetan Tierra, is a celebrated international concert pianist. Carnegie Hall debut critics called him "the real deal," one of only four Americans to compete at the 2009 Van Cliburn, a Yamaha Artist, and Chair of the MTAC Southern Region State Solo/Concerto Competition.
That standard raises the floor for the whole academy: the level every student reaches toward, the caliber of the faculty around them, and the programs and guest artists sdpa is able to offer. And students here get to watch their Artistic Director perform live, seeing the standard in action instead of just hearing about it.

A complete year of music.
One tuition, a full academy. Every student gets access to a year-round calendar of recitals, workshops, an earned five-level credential, a professional artist series, and the chance to be named to our Honors Program, the academy's highest distinction.
When it fits a student's goals, we also prepare them for competitions at every level: local, national, and international, for auditions into prestigious summer programs and conservatory or university placement, and for outside testing such as Certificate of Merit, ABRSM, and RCM.
The Difference is Real
Plenty of places will teach you a few songs. Far fewer can build a musician. The difference is not marketing. It is real, and it shows up in the playing.
Artists, not just instructors. Our faculty have performed on the world's stages and competed at the highest international level. A student can only be taken as far as their teacher has gone. At sdpa, that ceiling is the top.
A foundation, not a shortcut. No app and no badge replaces the patient, correct work that produces real command of the instrument. We build it right from the start, which is exactly why our students progress faster in the long run.
One tuition, full access. A year round stage, an earned credential, an honors track, a professional artist series, a community of serious musicians. These are not add ons. They are what turns lessons into an education.
Results you can point to. Our students win local, regional, and international competitions and earn places at the country's finest conservatories. The proof is on our News page, and it is current.

Built Slow. Moves Fast.
A flawless foundation looks slow at first, but it isn't. The early months ask for patience: even fingers, a steady internal pulse, good habits built one at a time before speed is ever the goal.
Then the compounding begins. Each new piece comes faster than the last, there's no ceiling that arrives early and no bad habits to unlearn down the road, and many students experience a dramatic leveling up that carries them toward whatever their goals are: competitions, conservatory, or simply playing the music they love well.
The foundation isn't a delay before real progress. It is where true progress comes from.

Built Right, Built to Last
The most common thing we fix is a talented student who progressed too fast on a shaky foundation. It is far easier to build it right from the beginning than to clean it up later. If your child shows real promise, the best gift is a teacher who can shape it properly now. That is what we do, and the path leads somewhere real: our students rise to the top of San Diego and California, and go on to the country's finest programs.
Our artist faculty are also dedicated and award-winning teachers. They have studied at the most prestigious conservatories in the United States and Europe, won international competitions, and performed at the highest level, and have chosen to pour that mastery into their students.
Our teachers invest real time and care into every student, learning what drives them and what they need to grow. No two students are alike, and neither are their goals, which is why we take pride in placing each one with the teacher best suited to get them there.
Piano is not a secondary skill here. It is the primary instrument of every teacher on our faculty. That kind of mastery only comes from a lifetime devoted to one craft.

At the 2026 MTAC Southern Regional Concerto Competition, the largest competition stage in Southern California, sdpa students swept the entire Under-18 podium: Luna Lee first, Colvin Davis second, Sage Taylor third. Luna advances to the State Finals. A clean sweep of the top three at this level is something no other school in the region can claim, and it is the clearest proof of what study at sdpa produces.
At the 2026 San Diego Chopin Festival, which drew more than 100 students across seven divisions, sdpa faculty and their students earned 17 of the 35 awards given. A remarkable showing for the academy across multiple studios, and proof that the standard runs deep here, not just at the top.
